Postgraduate Study at the Department of History
The History Department at Stirling is host to a number of postgraduates pursuing research degrees, and welcomes applications from suitably qualified persons. The attractions of undertaking advanced research in History at Stirling are myriad.
The departmental staff are experienced in supervision, committed, and offer particular strengths in a number of historical research fields - important facets since the relationship between supervisor and postgraduate is obviously critical to a successful period of study. As research degrees in History can sometimes be lonely and antisocial pursuits, one's surroundings are also critical. Stirling offers not only a beautiful and peaceful campus, complete with library and equipment, but is also well placed for travel to other archives, and boasts a lively and welcoming postgraduate community. History postgraduates at Stirling are active participants in the life of the Department - contributing to research seminars, collaborative publications, and, on occasion, supplementing teaching. Many go on to pursue careers in academia, teaching, or other occupations that value their advanced degrees.
Candidates applying for postgraduate study are normally expected to have at least an upper second-class Honours degree or equivalent in History or a related subject, or, in the case of Environmental History, a relevant subject. Postgraduate students need not be resident at Stirling.vv
